US elections 2008: Hillary Clinton’s pledge to ‘obliterate’ Iran if it attacks Israel is unnecessarily bellicose

By Richard Silverstein
The Guardian, 22/04/08

In an interview on ABC‘s Good Morning America today, Hillary Clinton pledged that if Iran launches a nuclear attack against Israel, the United States would retaliate against Iran. “I want the Iranians to know that if I’m the president, we will attack Iran,” Clinton said. “In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them.”

Today promises to be a decisive moment in the Democratic primary campaign, as voters head to the polls in Pennsylvania. Clinton’s comments this morning echo remarks she made last week in Philadelphia. There, during the presidential debate, Clinton came just short of promising a nuclear attack on Iran if it were to strike Israel or any of its other Arab neighbours.

Full Interview With Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Presstitute, Scott Pelley interviewed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran on Thursday. Ahmadinejad talks about his visit to New York, Iran’s nuclear program and his views on Israel.

Full transcript below.

TRANSCRIPT

SCOTT PELLEY: Do you have a greeting to the American people?

MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD: In the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful, I would like to greet the American people and the good nations around the world. Right now we are in the city of Tehran. It’s in the afternoon of an autumn day. We’re in the open air in a garden. And the air is pleasant. And fall, little by little, is settling in, mixing with the summer breeze, I guess. And I think that right now, you have different time zones obviously and different climates. We have early morning in the U.S. and other time zones perhaps approaching the noon. So once again, greetings to you. I very much hope that nations around the world start their days with peace, friendship, and happiness.

President Ahmadinejad Delivers Remarks to the National Press Club

SEPTEMBER 24, 2007

SPEAKER: IRANIAN PRESIDENT MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD

AHMADINEJAD (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): In the name of God, the compassionate, the merciful…

TRANSLATOR: The president is reciting verses from the holy Koran in Arabic.

AHMADINEJAD (THROUGH TRANSLATOR): I am very glad to sit down and meet with members of the press and congratulate the 100th year of your activities.

And at the outset, I would like to raise a fundamental question on a key issue. I’d like to invite all to look at world events.

When we take a look around us, we are not happy with what we see. Indeed, it is a most unsatisfactory state of affairs. Insecurity, discrimination and threats of war and security concerns have affected everyone. Continuous wars have, in fact, hurt the human spirit.

I believe if we look at the root cause of some of these problems, we will be able to think of how to build a better future, a more prosperous future, based on peace and security for all humanity.

Come to Jihad: A Speech to the People of Pakistan

By Shaykh Usama bin Ladin
September 2007/Ramadan 1428″

“All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him and seek His aid and forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil in ourselves and from our bad deeds. He whom Allah guides cannot be led astray, and he who is led astray cannot be guided. I bear witness that there is no God other than Allah alone, without partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.”

“As for what comes after:”

“To my Muslim brothers in Pakistan:”

“Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

“Allah, the Most High, says, ‘O Prophet! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be harsh against them. Their abode is Hell, and an evil destination it is.’ (9:73) And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, says, ‘There is no one who abandons a Muslim in a place where his honor is violated and his sanctity is infringed upon except that Allah, the Most High, abandons him in a place in which he would like His aid. And there is no one who aids a Muslim in a place where his honor is violated and his sanctity is infringed upon except that Allah aids him in a place in which he would like His aid.’ (Narrated by Ahmad)”

Interview With Investigative Journalist Seymour Hersh

Interview With Investigative Journalist Seymour Hersh: “The President Has Accepted Ethnic Cleansing
By Charles Hawley and David Gordon Smith
Der Spiegel, 28/09/07

Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has consistently led the way in telling the story of what’s really going on in Iraq and Iran. SPIEGEL ONLINE spoke to him about America’s Hitler, Bush’s Vietnam, and how the US press failed the First Amendment.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was just in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Once again, he said that he is only interested in civilian nuclear power instead of atomic weapons. How much does the West really know about the nuclear program in Iran?

Seymour Hersh: A lot. And it’s been underestimated how much the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) knows. If you follow what (IAEA head Mohamed) ElBaradei and the various reports have been saying, the Iranians have claimed to be enriching uranium to higher than a 4 percent purity, which is the amount you need to run a peaceful nuclear reactor. But the IAEA’s best guess is that they are at 3.67 percent or something. The Iranians are not even doing what they claim to be doing. The IAEA has been saying all along that they’ve been making progress but basically, Iran is nowhere. Of course the US and Israel are going to say you have to look at the worst case scenario, but there isn’t enough evidence to justify a bombing raid.

Interview with an Israeli Zionist on the rights and wrongs of Zionism

Interview with an Israeli Zionist
on the rights and wrongs of Zionism
Haaretz, “Survival of the fittest”, 01/09/04

Benny Morris says he was always a Zionist. People were mistaken when they labeled him a post-Zionist, when they thought that his historical study on the birth of the Palestinian refugee problem was intended to undercut the Zionist enterprise. Nonsense, Morris says, that’s completely unfounded. Some readers simply misread the book.

They didn’t read it with the same detachment, the same moral neutrality, with which it was written. So they came to the mistaken conclusion that when Morris describes the cruelest deeds that the Zionist movement perpetrated in 1948 he is actually being condemnatory, that when he describes the large-scale expulsion operations he is being denunciatory. They did not conceive that the great documenter of the sins of Zionism in fact identifies with those sins. That he thinks some of them, at least, were unavoidable.
